Alex Wilding MSc MBPsS
My journey into the film industry began at Salford University in 2002, where I earned a HND in Media Production and a BSc in Professional Broadcast Techniques. Alongside these studies, I tapped into my entrepreneurial spirit, promoting club nights and DJing across the university campus and in Manchester city centre. This passion for music profoundly influences my approach to video editing; I view films as compositions that require rhythm and beat.
A native East Londoner, I returned home in 2006 and secured an editing role at Radical Media in Soho, working for visionary directors such as Terry Gilliam, Dave Meyers, and Tarsem Singh. This experience was a springboard into a successful freelancing career, working with diverse clients including Nintendo, O2, Universal Music, Design My Night, War Child, and many more.
My love for film continued to grow as I explored different mediums, particularly documentary filmmaking. This passion led me to co-found The London Documentary Network in 2015, a community of over 2000 members known for its flagship 'Doc in a Day' competition, a concept I proudly pioneered and developed with the rest of the team.
In 2017, I advanced my entrepreneurial journey with the launch of Vidicrew, an innovative video app. I oversaw the social media, editing and tech development teams, mastering the Agile project management methodology, and the effectiveness of User-Generated Content for marketing. My co-founder and I raised over £200k in SEIS & EIS investment from scratch, targeting the wedding market. Unfortunately, this sector was heavily impacted by the Covid pandemic, leading to the company's eventual closure in 2022.
Prior to Vidicrew, I furthered my education with a Masters in Psychology from the University of East London (UEL) in 2014. My thesis focused on my work with children at a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) and was ultimately published in 2016. I also trained, qualified, and worked as a BACP Child Arts Counsellor at The Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education (IATE) and in schools across London.
All of these experiences have been invaluable to my development, complementing my filmmaking skills by deepening my understanding of human psychology and enhancing my communication and interpersonal skills.
I am proud of my creative career path and the person it has shaped me to be today., dare I say, when life gives you lemons… make them fly!
